The collapse of Philadelphia’s Jay Cooke’s railroad empire in September of 1873 triggers a massive depression that lasts nearly six years. Amidst the mounting wreckage, the Adair’s sally forth in August 1874 in search of a buffalo trophy and an inside investment opportunity. A visit to Chez Phil Sheridan in Chicago was key part of that mix.
